Definitive Introduction of Brownian Motion and Markov Processes

The authors have compiled an excellent text which introduces the reader to the fundamental theory of Brownian motion from the point of view of modern martingale and Markov process theory. I highly recommend this book for anyone who wants to acquire and in-depth understanding of Brownian motion and stochastic calculus.

The book is fairly self-contained, although the reader should prepare herself with some prerequisite material. Rudin's Real and Complex Analysis and Norris' Markov Chains provide a good basis. You'll also need a solid understanding of the basic properties of Laplace transforms as is covered in an undergraduate course on differential equations (e.g. Schiff's The Laplace Transform: Theory and Applications).

Rogers and Williams begin Chapter 1 of the 2nd edition of their first volume 'Foundations' by exploring Brownian motion from several different modern viewpoints. This is intended to help the reader develop an intuition about Brownian motion and related diffusions. They then move on to explore the well-known features of Brownian motion, including the strong Markov property, the Reflection principle, the Blumenthal Zero-One Law and the Law of the Iterated Logarithm.

The section on Brownian motion in higher dimensions is very nice and I enjoyed the applications of Brownian motion to complex analysis. I particularly liked the Ito's Rule-style proof of the Maximum Modulus Principle.
The authors close out Chapter 1 with detailed introductions of Gaussian and Levy Processes.

In the chapter on Brownian motion, the authors make several forward references to Chapter 2, which covers the prerequisite material from measure theory, probability theory, and stochastic processes needed for both volume I and II. If you found these forward references a bit unsettling, it is quite reasonable to first read Chapter 2 (sections 1-5), then read Chapter 1, and then finish up with canonical Brownian motion section at the end of Chapter 2.

Chapter 3 is a wonderful treatment of Markov processes and requires that the reader have an appreciation of the classical theory of Markov chains. In the first section of Chapter 3, the basic theory of operator semigroups is covered and the authors prove the famous Hille-Yosida Theorem.

The next section covers the 'base case' of operator semigroups. Rogers and Williams refer to these as Feller-Dynkin semigroups. (Ethier and Kurtz simply call these Feller semigroups in their book Markov Processes: Characterization and Convergence.) Each Feller-Dynkin semigroup is shown to be realized by strong Markov process. Continuous Levy processes are then characterized as a nice application of the Feller-Dynkin theory.

The highlight of the next section is the Feynmac-Kac formulas. These are presented from the Markov process point of view (computing generators of transformed Markov processes), not from the usual PDEs point of view. Since the authors don't have Ito's Rule available in this first volume, they establish Feynman-Kac using the theory of additive functionals.

The final sections of the book deal with Markov processes with values in a countable state space. Ray processes and the Martin boundary are introduced, however as I began read this material, I felt that the authors believed that I already knew why Ray Theory is so important. I felt this last material would have been a bit better motivated with more of a tie-in to the theory of harmonic functions and the Dirichlet problem. However, the proof of Ray's Theorem is very elegant and really solidifies the reader's understanding of the Hille-Yosida Theorem.

Several of the sections wrap up with a small set of exercises. There are also exercises sprinkled throughout the text (several of which the authors plead with you to work through). The exercises have been thoughtfully selected and reinforce the material.

A Great Book

This book and its companion volume are a well organized and relatively easy-to-read introduction to a wide variety of ideas in stochastic processes. It is not only a great reference (I always keep it on my desk) but it also has a solid expositional style that fully motivates concepts as they are introduced. The Ito Calculus volume goes deeper than a number of other books on topic including information on integration wrt to a general semimartingale instead of just BM and even an introduction to stochastic calculus on manifolds. My only complaints about the book are that it is separated into two volumes which can be kind of a pain and that its coverage of the SDE/PDE relationship is weak. I would recommend reading Karatzas&Shreeve in addition to this book to fill in some the SDE/PDE details and to get another point of view on the somewhat difficult topic of stochastic analysis

A Beautiful Survey of Markov Processes

This book, the first in a two volume set, is a wonderful survey of some of the most important results in modern mathematics. The books begin with Brownian motion, review results from measure theory, and proceed all the way up to the general theory of Markov processes. As a researcher in econometrics and finance, I have found these books incredibly useful.

Several things really set these books apart. First, the authors do a great job motivating the subject matter, giving the reader a sense of why technical topics are important. Although mathematical purists may quibble with this, it gives readers with backgrounds outside of pure mathematics a really useful perspective, and makes the progression of topics flow smoothly throughout the two volumes. Second, these books actually manage to provide motivation and intuition without sacrificing rigor, which is truly an amazing accomplishment. Finally, the price is outstanding--I would challenge anyone to find a text in this area that covers half as much ground for less than twice the price of R&W's books!

While on a similar technical level to Karatzas and Shreve, these books offer much more breadth and intuition at the cost of a few technical details and little treatment of PDEs (this is really my only complaint). Both are indispensible references, but Rogers and Williams is one of the finest mathematical texts I have encountered.

Excellent resource and teaching tool (if you don't need additional assistance).

This book makes either an excellent teaching resource or a good personal reference book. I got it for teaching horticulture to my niece and ended up spending hours reading for my own personal benefit! There is one drawback. In the early pages of the book, reference is made to additional material (for teaching) which can be obtained from the Pearson's website. This material is NOT available to anyone who does not purchase the book through that website. However, when my sister attempted to purchase 1 copy of the book through the aforementioned website, there was no way to do so. Therefore, in effect, this supplemental material is NOT available to anyone who is NOT teaching in an accredited college...although the book could be taught to someone at the Junior and senior level of high school! In fact, I spent over 5 hours on the phone (being transferred from one department to another) before being told (on the website)that, although the supplemental material is available to home-schooling parents) that, in reality, it is NOT available!

If you are looking for an excellent book on horticulture, this is an excellent resource. If you are looking for an excellent textbook on the subject, it is also excellent. However, you must be prepared to go it on your own with the book as you will get NO HELP from Pearson's!

A highly educated mess

Here's the bottom line: buy "Please Understand Me II" - it's a much better book. More practical, interesting, readable and accessible.

This book is a mess. It is an attempt to take the basic premise of Keirsey's serious and valid theories as presented in previous books like Please Understand Me II, and greatly elaborate on them. Didn't work out so well. I really liked Keirsey's past works, and this was a disappointment, even though it still had lots of insight, and some good parts to it.

Sadly, this book was not written for ordinary people. It was written for one of two types of people:

1. People whose personality type is INTP like Keirsey's, and are versed in MBTI.

2. People who're REALLY into MBTI, have read Keirsey's past works and liked them a lot, and are interested in getting some fresh ideas which expand upon Keirsey's theories.

As an INTJ, I belong in the second group. I still feel as if this book is troublesome to read, to say the least. Keirsey has a fetish for words, which is an INTP thing to have. This has gone overboard. Oftentimes, one is not sure if Keirsey had been at times confused, and was writing a dictionary instead of a non-fiction book. There's a hell of a lot of discussion on words. There are many lists of words. There is much background given on the historical origins of words and the roots of words. Even as a fellow NT, this is too much. I couldn't stand it. Sometimes, it feels as if Keirsey likes his words more than he likes human beings. There are certainly more word-lists in this book than there are concrete, real-life examples of human behavior (which are generally lacking in this work for some reason).

Another major problem is Keirsey's assumptions on evolutionary psychology. In general, I accept his idea with regard to the various types as they are today probably being representations of evolutionary pressures in primeval human groups. However, here again Keirsey goes overboard with his INTP thing. Instead of actually referencing some work or research in either evolutionary psychology and/or anthropology, he constructs purely from his imagination stories of how hunter-gatherer societies must have behaved, and how this all correlates with his theories. Now, his stories are well constructed and plausible, BUT HE HAS NO PROOF WHATSOEVER!! It was one thing if he were to say he's just assuming, but these stories, as well as many other assumptions in the book, are presented as "facts".

There are many other issues with the book I won't trouble you with. It's a good piece of work in a messed up format, and is oftentimes genuinely lacking a human feel to it. Buy it only if you belong in one of the above-mentioned groups. Don't bother otherwise.

Not the book for the general public

Personology is the completion of the revised 4 temperament model first presented in Portraits of Temperament ( 1987 ), and used in Keirsey's later works. The 8 Jungian function types are replaced by 8 intelligence types. The intelligence types are the 4 temperaments, each having 2 subtypes, and minus extroversion and introversion. Then each of the 2 subtypes is itself split into 2 more subtypes called proactive and reactive, for a total of 16 types.... This books completes the explanation of Keirsey's model.

But, this book is not the one for the general public should buy, that book is Please Understand Me II. I started with the original Please Understand Me, and it really helped me understand my co-workers, who with one exception, turned to be all the SJ temperament. Both understand me books have large sections on mating, children and children from a 4 temperament viewpoint This book is too specialized! It was a birthday present, I would have had to have given it some thought, if I were buying it myself.

An unapologetic treatise on human behavior

Keirsey takes on the immense task of diffentiating human behavior into useful categories. He has written on this before; Please Understand Me II is perhaps his most popular work, written in 1998. That book was written more for the common person, in a style that masked Keirsey's razor-sharp analysis. Granted, the book still makes a powerful analysis, but bends over backwards to make it more accessible. As a result, the ideas lose a bit of precision.

In this book, Keirsey takes off the mask and shares more details and more angles of his analysis. His discovery, which inherits a rich lineage of ideas over millenia, is that there are precisely four distinct manifestations of human behavior, and they are distinct on an individual basis. One's temperament is innate. Keirsey does not apologize for this idea, since he wants to very clearly distinguish it from other views in psychology.

In the task of differentiating behavior, Keirsey must articulate these differences very clearly. He is therefore forced to use words in very particular ways; ways that may seem odd to those who have never had to be so precise with human language. As a result, he faces the problem of choosing which words are most appropriate for a given idea, and often the choice is too difficult to make. So yes, Personology contains a lot of words. (It is, after all, a book). In this, I suggest that patience is necessary; the ideas are subtle, and it is not easy for Keirsey or anybody else to make such a statement without wrestling with words. Therefore accept that this is a book to savor; it is not meant to be plowed through in a few days. I find that it suits my natural reading style, which is to simply crack the book open to a random page and flip through until I find something that catches my eye.

A mess? Perhaps in manifest, but not in principle; Personology represents the height of Keirsey's effort on understanding human behavior. Unlike other theories of psychology, it is coherent and consistent. It has no unnecessary parts. Yes, it would be much easier to write a book that is vague and has needless concepts, since this is the status-quo. One is certainly free to read another book and learn perhaps a hundredth of what you would learn from Personology. But if you must know, read Personology and you will know.

Tchaikovsky's Ballets

Roland John Wiley's treatise on Tchaikovsky's ballets is the most comprehensive, enlightening and informative dissertation that I have read thus far. While most analyses of the ballets focus on the choreography, Wiley's book provides a complete historical, social and political context that sheds not only new light on the ballets but Tchaikovsky's creativeness as well. Initially, I hesitated getting this book because of its price tag. Reading the book made me immediately realize that it was a must have at any price.
Moreover, I would highly recommend Wiley's 2009 book "Tchaikovsky," which is on a par with David Brown's four-volume work on Tchaikovsky. Both authors provide accurate and detailed objective analyses on both the composer and his music. Do not be put off by the price. This book on Tchaikovsky's ballets is a must have for those who love ballet and Tchaikovsky.

A pleasure to read, both from a musical as well as dance perspective. The author's expertise and lively prose make this one of the rare scholarly reference book that is anything but dry. Keen musical analyses are side by side with endearing personal anecdotes about Tchaikovsky's encounters with his collaborators. Truly illuminating and a joy to read for anyone interested in the Russian ballet theatre as well as Tchaikovsky fans.

It's Personal

For nearly seven years, I worked as a lab technician at the Toms River Chemical Corporation. I remember the initial economic benefit the dye-and-plastics manufacturing plant brought to the community and its philanthropic projects designed to ingratiate it with the population. I remember endorsing the company's effluent pipeline and its alleged efforts to be a good neighbor. That was then. Before the knowledge became public that the plant's Swiss masters were following a time-dishonored tradition: from originally polluting the Rhine River, next to polluting the Ohio River, and finally to polluting the Toms River. Before we knew that waste organics were being secretly dumped onto the sandy soil, where they leached into the groundwater, polluting not only individual wells but the township wells too. Before the onset of the cancer cluster that claimed the lives of many children whose mothers' only sin seemed to be unknowingly drinking tainted water during pregnancy. This book delves deeply into the history of the dye industry and the lessons it brought to Toms River--unfortunately, after the fact. The thorough documentation, in the form of endnotes, often provides sidebars that are fascinating in themselves. This is not a book you'll read in one sitting. The science is detailed and sometimes overwhelms. The anguish of the families is palpable. And the political posturing and deception displayed by the players can stimulate outrage. As well they should.

A master class in science writing

I'm five chapters in and I've already learned so much. I'm reading this for my Intro to Environmental Health class and it's such a breath of fresh air. This is a great way for anyone to learn about the basics of environmental health, it's history, the policy (or lack thereof) pertaining to it, and the very real, personal consequences of ignoring environmental health hazards. I love that Fagin doesn't limit his writing to the story at hand. He doesn't just write about pollution in Toms River, but also the origins of the dye that the Toms River plant manufactured. He doesn't just write about one man's cancer, but cancer throughout human history. I am excited to share this with all my friends, and to eventually (hopefully) write something this fascinating and important.

"Tumors cost Michael the full use of his left eye and ear, ruined his balance, and shifted the location of his internal organs. Steroid drugs stunted his growth and bloated his face, while chemotherapy weakened his heart and lungs, destroyed the lining of his stomach, and dissolved his bones to the point that walking was painful."
At three months of age Michael was diagnosed with neuroblastoma, cancer of the nervous system.
Toms River would transition from a small fishing and tourist destination to a major enclave of secret agreements, corporate bribes and cover-ups, monetary issues beyond greed and passion, moribund citizenry ignorance and indifference, where calloused attitudes of local and State officials created a cauldron of social dissonance and ecological disorders. Toms River Chemical Corporation would become the region's economic engine on which employment came to being perceived as a must-have bastion for continued prosperity.
Toms River Chemical Corporation would also become a hazardous waste disposal income generator from accepting 25 truckloads of waste each day into its six open-pit dumps.
Cyanide, dimethyl sulfate, xylene, nitrobenzene, phosgene are just a few of the more than two dozen chemicals and agents manufactured by what would become the world's largest chemical producer.
Toms River is a 500 plus tome of discovery in 24 chapters of corporate chicanery eloquently detailed as lawyers and executives conspire endlessly to defend a culture of bottom-line results above all else. Only one company in New Jersey was allowed to dump industrial waste into the Atlantic where chemicals were found within a half-mile from the closest beach. "One company" was Ciba-Geigy (formerly Toms River Chemical Corporation) the county's largest employer and a powerful political crucible.
At the end of 1988 the Toms River factory produced its last batch of dry chemicals; BASF acquired the final remnants of Ciba's chemical business.
It was a long journey of drama and intrigue that is well presented alongside the connected human frailties by author Fagin. The final message of
this manuscript seems to be that corporate evil with assists from individual power brokers have no limits.
Indubitably.
