syrup making book for kids

This book tells the basic story behind making maple syrup, but has some artwork that is not at all like the process we personally use to make syrup. They show animals drinking sap from the buckets while that hang on the trees. I don't know who allows this to happen, maybe some do, but not in my sugarbush! Otherwise it is fun and informative.

The Brockwells, a large extended family, enjoy producing maple syrup together. Every member of the family, including the little cousins and the grandparents, has a job to do in the various stages of production. First they tap the maple trees and hang buckets to collect the sap, and when the buckets have filled, they pour the sap into a giant barrel to take to the sugarhouse. From a storage tank in the sugarhouse, the sap runs into evaporating pans and is heated to a boil. Once the correct temperature is reached and enough water has boiled off, the syrup is ready to be filtered, poured into jars, and graded according to sweetness and color.

This excellent book is sure to please with its informative text and delightful art work. The clear descriptions, detailed illustrations, and author's note in the back all work well together to make Maple Syrup Season a useful resource for teachers seeking to spice up a lesson about natural resources. Armed with new knowledge about the difference between Fancy Grade and Grade A-Dark Amber, the reader may see a whole new side to things while walking through the maple syrup section of the local grocery store.

Favorite Picture Book on Maple Syrup for Young Children

I just read through a number of picture books on making maple syrup with my children (ages 2-9). This was my favorite. The illustrations were delightful enough to keep the attention of even my 2 year old, and the text provided enough information so that all my children could learn about the process. We also enjoyed Sugaring, Sugarbush Spring, & Sugar Snow (My First Little House).

This book is not trying to sell you a $13k tool chest or a $20 4-pack of soap stone that will somehow make it all happen. It's been put together by the kind of guy who get's dressed up in his best pair of jeans and t-shirt to pose next to the incredible thing he just built. Written in a way that anyone could design their own shop even if all they have is a bucket of loose 1970's no-name sockets, some scrap wood, a 1980's stripped Honda, a pile of half-rusted wrenches, and a garage like those you rent in an apartment complex. I am a pro mechanic, welder, and fabricator and my home shop is a compilation of not so pretty stuff that works great. Half the time I walk through the door of my shop and wonder how anything comes out alive! This book is designed so anyone, regardless of budget, can dream up a shop and not worry about going broke in the process. I enjoy books like this because they remind me that skill and vision trump high-dollar tools and a glistening shop that looks like the only thing that's even been run in it was a mop.

An In-depth and colorful look at workshop setup

I greatly enjoyed this in-depth look at the motorcycle workshop. Since I am setting up my own shop, I constantly pictured how the concepts put forth by the author could be applied to my work area. The author is a wealth of information, and is very good at providing some alternate methods when applicable to suit a person's personal taste. There is much more to setting up an efficient workshop than one would think, and this is obvious after the first page or two. How do you set up an efficient and effective motorcycle workshop? The author pretty much slam-dunks that question, with lots of real-life examples, some common pitfalls, and a dry but very funny sense of humor. If you really, really want to know about setting up a shop, look no further. Another excellent book in a high quality series of books.

James is the perfect troll master

This book is hilarious. James is the perfect troll master. Granted, not everybody thinks this stuff is hilarious. but I do.

I bought the book on a whim after reading portions of it online. While waiting for the delivery, I had moments of doubt "Is this book worth it? It wasn't even Amazon Prime-able. I had to pay shipping&handling." Then I got the book, and all those doubts faded away.

It's one of those books that are hilarious! But I read it slowly to treasure every email conversation. No need to rush through b/c we know how it will end. It's just a great book to have to read a couple troll-spam stories and really enjoy the moment.

Best neural network textbook for beginners

This is definitely a must read for all NN beginners. In my opinion, this book is very well organized. First, it puts theoretical stuff and applicaiton examples into separate parts (Part I&II). Second, in Part I, it starts with basic constituents of NNs: one neuron NN, activation fucntion, learning rule,...and then covers NNs of more large-scale types. Within each type, it describes the most rudementary or prototype NN first, supplements info regarding other variants next, and mentions the issues to be encountered for actual implemention. This all makes this book so easy to follow. I can quickily decide whether I can skip the coming section/subsection and no worry of discontinuity as I read along.

A must read for anyone interested in UX.

This book has proven to be most helpful. It is such a fundamental book on the UX topic that I've never fully comprehended, but always heard the term. The book really took me step by step. The first chapter has introductory sections ("what is ux, really?") that really helped me understand the difference between UX and usability. Also- chapter 3—which is all about understanding who you are designing for. That's baseline content that I found so helpful. Jumping to Chapter 12 - testing. I think that's a pretty fundamental chapter for anyone that wants to learn about this topic. It includes some basics on how to explore whether a design is working or not. There is a lot of misinformation out there on that topic and this chapter really gets to the core of it.

This series has done it again. I bought some other Dummies books, and they were all informative and user friendly, but I was somewhat familiar with the other topics. This one has given me directions and understanding of a concept I knew very little about in thorough yet simple easy to grasp way. Thank you for writing this book.

The book lays out every aspect of UX in a comprehensive and useful way. I especially love the sections on content strategy and usability testing, which are not everyday topics for people who are new to digital work or website development. I highly recommend purchasing a copy for the office!

Previous to the Nara Period, the Japanese had been a semi-nomadic race. As each successive Mikado came to the throne, he built himself a new palace, and founded a new capital; there had been more than sixty capitals before the Nara Period. Such shifting was not conducive to the development of literature and the arts, and it was not until a permanent government was established at Nara that these began to flourish. This is scarcely the place to trace the history of Japanese literature, but fully to understand these charming "Diaries of Court Ladies of Old Japan," it is necessary to know a little of the world they lived in, to be able to feel their atmosphere and recognize their allusions. We know a good deal about Japan to-day, but the Japan with which we are familiar only slightly resembles that of the Diaries. Centuries of feudalism, of "Dark Ages," have come between. We must go behind all this and begin again. We have all heard of the "Forty-seven Ronins" and the No Drama, of Shoguns, Daimios, and Samurais, and many of us live in daily communion with Japanese prints. It gives us pause to reflect that the earliest of these things is almost as many centuries ahead of the Ladies as it is behind us. "Shogun" means simply "General," and of course there were always generals, but the power of the Shoguns, and the military feudalism of which the Daimios and their attendant Samurais were a part, did not really begin until the middle of the twelfth century and did not reach its full development until the middle of the fourteenth; the No Drama started with the ancient religious pantomimic dance, the Kagura, but not until words were added in the fourteenth century did it become the No; and block colour printing was first practised in 1695, while such famous print artists as Utamaro, Hokusai, and Hiroshige are all products of the eighteenth or early nineteenth centuries. To find the Ladies behind the dark military ages, we must go back a long way, even to the century before their own, and so gain a sort of perspective for them and their time.

A fascinating read of real diaries Japan c.1000ce

Reading the real diaries of women in Japan c.1000 ce takes you back to a time and place that is so different yet seems so familiar to today. While the West was struggling out of the Dark Ages, there existed this culture of high literacy and sophisticated aesthetics,albeit to a select few. In no way a perfect society, it is fascinating how the mores shaped and played out historically.

Slow, but interesting.

Only for history buffs, history buffs who like detail, rather than the 'big picture.' Poor Court Ladies of Old Japan - seems that they spent most of their time changing outfits for different times of the day, different seasons of the year, different ceremonies and gatherings at court. A lot of words were devoted to descriptions of the many layers of robes or kimono a lady and her maid could contrive. Yes, some of these women wrote poetry, some (maybe all) had lovers sneaking in under cover of darkness, but many of them must have lived lives of unrelieved boredom. The most entertaining things at court were gossip and games and any occasion for a little party. The diaries move slowly and gracefully, just as life at court must have moved, describing meals and the preparation for meals - which lady in waiting would serve the Empress. Men and women each had their own world, mostly meeting for moon-viewing parties, poetry contests, and perhaps a game of shuttlecock. I'm not surprised at the women writing, they had very little else to do.

The unprecedented progress of East Asia Pacifi c is a triumph of working people. Countries that were low-income a generation ago successfully integrated into the global value chain, exploiting their labor-cost advantage. In 1990, the region held about one-third of the world's labor force. Leveraging this comparative advantage, the share of global GDP of emerging economies in East Asia Pacific grew from 7 percent in 1992 to 17 percent in 2011. Yet the region now fi nds itself at a critical juncture. Work and its contribution to growth and well-being can no longer be taken for granted. Labor's share of national income has been declining across most of the region. The challenges range from high youth inactivity and rising inequality to binding skills shortages and lagging infrastructure.

A key underlying issue is pervasive and persistent economic informality, despite rapid urbanization, which constrains innovation and productivity, limits the tax base, and increases household vulnerability to shocks. Informality is a consequence of both strict labor regulations and limited enforcement capacity. In several countries, de jure employment regulations are more stringent than in many parts of southern Europe. Even labor regulations set at reasonable levels but poorly implemented can exacerbate the market failures they were designed to overcome. Aggravating these failures further are underinvestment in transportation infrastructure and poor urban planning, limited access to fi nance for investment and growth, and the failure of the skills-supply system to keep up with the changing demands of modern market economies.

East Asia Pacific At Work argues that governments in the region will have to actively help markets sustain the well-being that people can expect from work. The appropriate policy responses to these challenges are to ensure macroeconomic stability and a regulatory framework that encourages the vitality and growth of, in particular, small- and medium-size enterprises, where most people in the region work. The countries that are still mostly agrarian will need to focus more on raising agricultural productivity, a vital but often overlooked step in the process of structural transformation. In urbanizing countries, effective urban planning becomes critical, and better management and functioning of land markets, transportation infrastructure, and delivery of services will loosen constraints on the demand for labor and human capital. The most important investment Pacific island countries can make is to provide their young people with the human capital needed to succeed abroad as migrant workers. And across the region, it is critical to 'formalize' more work, thereby increasing the coverage of essential social protection and sustaining productivity. To this end, policies should encourage the mobility of labor and human capital, and not favor some forms of employment–for example, full-time wage employment in manufacturing–over others, either implicitly or explicitly. Policies to increase growth and well-being from employment should instead refl ect and support the dynamism and diversity of work across the region.
