the best stop-motion animation book ever

now i dont know how many books on stop-motion have been written but i cant believe that there is a more complete book on the subject.if you are a willys obrian/ray harryhausen fan you will find this book very informative.throw in the rest of the stop motion history and you have in this book a vertible whos-who on the subject.

Overflowing With Information

This is a great book, and it has quickly become one of my favorite Amazon purchases ever.

Just about anything you've ever wondered about stop-motion animation is both talked about AND illustrated in this book.

There are seven chapters. After some introductions, the first chapter is an overview of what is stop-motion animation, drawing in detail on Harryhausen's examples. Then a chapter on the early pioneers. Then, of course, a long chapter on O'Brien. Then an almost-as-long chapter on Harryhausen. Then there are three concluding chapters, on contemporaries of O'Brien and Harryhausen, the next generation after them, and the contemporary world of stop-motion. There are two pages of footnotes that provide great details and some behind-the-scenes gossip.

Although I love this book, I only gave four stars because of just a few nit-picking issues. One, it really isn't a general history of the field, it is a review of the O'Brien and Harryhausen careers with "additional information" on everyone else. Two, there is SO MUCH information sometimes the pages are too full. Sometimes a page will have the narrative of the book, an extended quote from one of the people and also multiple captions for the many photographs and illustrations. Sometimes it took a little effort to sort out what I was reading. Three, this is a high-quality book, with heavy paper stock, but my edition contained three pages with typography smears. The smears didn't obscure any text, but they really seemed out of place since the overall quality of the book was so high.

I really recommend this book highly. I would have liked to have seen more about the contemporary world--the final chapter is the shortest--but there is so much here that I will be reading and re-reading this book for a long time. Great stuff.

A must have for any stop-motion enthusiast.

Lots of great, high quality glossy photos in here. The book feels strong, its covers hard and protective. And hey, it's written by the Godfather of stop-motion, Ray Harryhausen. Even if you don't like to read, this book is worth the purchase just for the vintage photos and rarities only Harryhausen could offer. Lots on information and fun facts on the medium and a great section on Willis O'Brien. Weather you're an animator yourself, or just a fan of the arts and fine animation, you cannot go wrong with this book. And amazon's got the best price on the web to boot.

About the Author
Tom Toner was born in Somerset, England, in 1986. After graduating with a degree in Fine Art from Loughborough University and the FHSH in Schw�bisch Hall, Germany, he moved to Australia, teaching life drawing and working in an art gallery near Melbourne. Upon returning to England he completed his debut novel, The Promise of the Child. He lives in London.

Great writing shows immense potential; execution a little lacking

I'm honestly not quite sure what I think. I felt about this a lot like I did about Anne Leckie's ANCILLARY JUSTICE -- as if I should have loved it but somehow didn't. To be clear, I liked it better than Leckie's book by a fair margin, if only because it's more in my wheelhouse: a science-fantasy, written well and with full ambition on display.

Nonetheless, a lot in here just dragged on. From the imagery, which was compelling but oddly unclear to this reader's inner eye, to the plot itself (and I'm not really an "I-need-a-plot sort of guy"), there just wasn't a whole hell of a lot to hang onto beside the ambitious scope. The writing, while not once embarrassing -- my biggest worry picking up an sff book; my biggest worry when I go back to read my own work -- didn't really thrill me, either. There were a few supercool turns of phrase, but overall I didn't feel Toner reaching for anything.

... Again, other than scope. Toner is working the long game of the imagination, clearly, and for once I admire it. Why? Because it's not built on the soap-opera-ish drama of most epic sff works; instead, it's a real vision of a frustratingly rich (read: tantalizing, but not painted with any specificity) future. For that leap of imagination alone, it deserves four stars. If you're a reader like me, you'll be thrilled not so much by this single work, but the potential it reveals.

An extremely rich and innovative debut novel that was not what I had expected. I thought that The Promise of the Child will be a hard-SF post-human novel like Quantum Thief, but it was a space-opera with a science-fantasy flavor. I'm very much looking forward to the next volume.

Couldn't do it

I really wanted to like this book. I was so excited to read it, and started reading it immediately after I received it. However.... It was like being thrown into the middle of a stranger's conversation without knowing anything about what they're discussing. It was really confusing. There was no explanation behind the worlds, characters, species, etc until about 120 pages in, and at that point I stopped caring because it was still really vague. I tried to read further, but it just wouldn't hold my interest anymore.

I own many manuals on Ninjutsu, both historical and modern, fictional and fact, in Japanese and English, and rarely do I find one that can be compared side by side to its' original source material. This is such a work.

Don Roley is certified as a Japanese translator at the highest levels the Japanese test for, and it shows in his work on this volume. In addition to excellent language skills, Mr.Roley has extensive personal experience in Japanese Martial Arts, so brings both a deep personal understanding of the culture as well as the warrior mindset. Perhaps most important to me, he also very clearly confirms Fujita's statement about the end of Koga Ryu - this is important as there are many unscrupulous people who are still to this day trying to claim connection to Fujita's system, and who author flawed or false works to profit from that deception.

To summarize, if you want a unique, entertaining and accurate glimpse into the mind and writing of a true ninjutsu master, you must buy this translation of Fujita's work.

This book is a translation of a work by Fujita Seiko which seems to demonstrate how ninjutsu can be adapted to be useful in the modern world. Through reading this work you can gain a glimpse of Fujita Seiko's ninjutsu as well as a sense of his practicality; for example, he talks about how useful flashlights are and the advantages of them over torches. After reading this text I gained the impression that Fujita Seiko believed that ninjutsu was able to modernize its methods to remain relevant in the world. I would recommend this book to anyone interested in ninjutsu, Japanese history, or military history. this book is a manual on ninjutsu and therefore would not be very suitable for readers who are looking to be entertained by a story.

This translation of a masterful piece of writing on the martial arts by skilled martial artist and highly experienced Japanese translator Don Roley is a fantastic read for any student of the martial arts, and of course most particularly ninjutsu. The historical value in this work, the last master of Koga-ryu Ninjutsu's writings is immeasurable as well, and unless you can read Japanese, such work is only as good as it's translator and Roley has done excellent work here.

Ughhh... totally barbaric, and unbelievable.

This book was another romance that I've found to be compared to pulling teeth. There was so little romance in this book, it was more, "I'm going to marry you, and you have no say in the matter." The 3rd book in the Connelly series dropped the ball. The 1st two were excellent. This one felt like the outsider of the series, it didn't stay true to many of the storylines that had begun in the previous books. I would not recommend this to anyone, unless they're reading the series, and want to know the few details that come across in this book that are relevant to the mystery of who is trying to kill off King Daniel.
