Mother Courage and Her Children (Modern Plays), by Bertolt Brecht

This version of Brecht's great anti-war play is by David Hare and was premiered by the National Theatre, London, in November 1995. In this chronicle of the Thirty Years War, Mother Courage follows the armies back and forth across Europe, selling provisions and liquor from her canteen wagon. One by one she loses her children to the war but will not part with her livelihood - the wagon. The Berlin production of 1949, with Helene Weigel as Mother Courage, marked the foundation of the Berliner Ensemble.

Considered by many to be one of the greatest anti-war plays ever written and Brecht's masterpiece, it remains a powerful example of Brecht's epic theatre and pioneering theatrical style.

Review
“At last--the definitive translations of one of the 20th century's most influential playwrights…Far superior to the competition.” ―Theatre Journal

About the Author

A major dramatist of the twentieth century, Bertolt Brecht (1898-1956) was the founder of one of the most influential theatre companies, the Berliner Ensemble, and the creator of some of the landmark plays of the twentieth century: The Threepenny Opera, The Life of Galileo, Mother Courage and The Caucasian Chalk Circle.

An appalling translation
By G M
What were Penguin thinking? "Mother Courage and her Children" is a German-language play set in the 1600s. There is therefore no excuse for having one character turn to another to say "Bob's your uncle" within the opening lines. When reading this play, we are supposed to be hearing the voices of German peasants and soldiers. However, I found myself listening to what sounded like north-of-England coal-miners. (Perhaps this was translator John Willett's clever rendering of the 'Verfremdungseffekt'. If so, it has certainly succeeded in alienating this reader.) Within the first two scenes, we hear Mother Courage herself using such choice verbiage as:

"Talk proper to me, do you mind, and don't you dare say I'm pulling your leg in front of my unsullied children, 'taint decent, I got no time for you. My honest face, that's me licence with the Second Regiment, and if it's too difficult to read there's nowt I can do about it."

Talk proper, indeed. It gets worse. Here is another dollop of Yorkshire pudding for the reader to chew on:

"My eldest boy. It's two years since I lost sight of him, they pinched him from me on the road, must think well of him if the general's asking him to dinner, and what kind of a dinner can you offer? Nowt."

The dinner, it seems, is a dog's dinner. So awful was this translation that I soon wound up buying the Eyre Methuen edition (with Eric Bentley translating). Compare-and-contrast the two translations:

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
--Scene 1:--
EYRE METHUEN:
"Stay here. You're never happy till you're in a fight. He has a knife in his boot and he knows how to use it."
PENGUIN:
"Stop there! You varmint! I know you, nowt but fights. There's a knife down his boot. A slasher, that's what he is."
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

--Scene 2:--
EYRE METHUEN:
"Dear God, it's my Eilif!"

PENGUIN:
"Jesus Christ, it's my Eilif."

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
--Scene 2:--
EYRE METHUEN:
"Listen. When a general or a king is stupid and leads his soldiers into a trap. they need the virtue of courage."
PENGUIN:
"Look, s'pose some general or king is bone stupid and leads his men up shit creek, then those men've got to be fearless, there's another virtue for you."
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

So it was obvious by the end of Scene 2 that the cause was lost. I skipped to the end to see did it get any better. Nope:

--Scene 12:--
EYRE METHUEN:
"I hope I can pull the wagon by myself. Yes, I can manage. There's not much inside it now."

PENGUIN:
"Hope I can pull the cart along by meself. Be all right, nowt much inside it."

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
But why should we expect any better from this edition? No less than four different writers contribute three prefatory essays before the play has even started. They contain such aeroboard passages as:
"... perhaps no other literary or performative work has so relentlessly and ruthlessly engaged in such a critical-aesthetic experiment on war."
"Brecht understood, well before Anthony Swofford in his 2003 Gulf War I chronicle 'Jarhead', that all performative discourse on war, even the most antiwar, never rises above 'pornography' - hence the dangerous high-wire act Brecht performs with Mother Courage and its setting within the Thirty Years war."
And in case the clanking prose of the first quote didn't make enough of an impression on you, the next page reminds the reader that:
"For such a relentless and ruthlessly intellectual and emotional piece, it is a stunningly simple story."
Leaving aside the fact that Swofford wrote a memoir - which was therefore nothing to do with the 'performative' world, Brecht's "aesthetic and critical enterprise" was clearly about as dangerous as the consumption of a low-fat yoghurt. But the central problem here is the translation. We all know that verisimilitude was hardly Brecht's number one priority: that's no excuse, however, for Willett's trashing of the German language. The most important question facing any reader is how much value they will get from this translation. The answer is: nowt.
A Depressing Drama about Human Tragedy re Total War
By James E. Egolf
Bertolt Brecht (1898-1956)wrote a terribly depressing play which demonstrated the loss of character and decency among soldiers and civilians caught in the middle of total war. While the background of the play was the Thirty Years War (1618-1648),the play was about the terrible conditions that existed during W.W. II and thereafter. Brecht knew his work would "raise eyebrows," but he wrote and spoke that he did not care who was irritated by his work.
Brecht's background as a refugee from the Hitler regime and places that German forces invaded involved his relocating to avoid arrest and the ravages of war. In other words, Brecht knew the ravages and loss of self respect that war can generate. The characters in this drama were willing to "sell their souls" in other to either survive or to make money by taking advantage of the war. Mother Courage was willing to sacrifice her children to profit from the Thirty Years War. Maybe the message was that parents and cowardly political leaders are willing to sacrifice the lives of sons and daughters to satisfy their vain egos and "arm chair patriotism."
The misery described in this drama reflects the tragic dilemmas faced by civilians caught in the middle of W.W. II. The German/Soviet War (1941-1945)forced civilians caught in the middle to be at the mercy or lack thereof of German and Soviet forces. A saying was that men lost all hope, and women lost sense of shame if only to survive. The same conditions were faced by Germans during the Thirty Years War especially when mercenary troops were not paid and vented their frustrations on civlians. Famine and abuse of civilians was the norm during the Thirty Years War and poor souls during W.W. II.
Brecht's work resulted in his summons to the HUAC where he made fools out of the inquisitors and anyone who tried to nail him. Similar conditions existed during the Thirty Years war when Swedish troops under the command of King Adolphus (1611-1632)committed numerous atrocities in parts of Germany. As C.V. Wedgewood (1910-1997), the noted British historian, noted her book titled THE THIRTY YEARS published in 1939, war and violence beget more war and violence. The moral of Brecht's play is that the war involved so much hatred that the Europeans had difficulty to end this war until total exhaustion forced them to do so.
Brecht's drama should be read in conjunction with the book titled THE BACKWASH OF WAR. Both books give a depressing yet vivid reminder of what war does to people. The Ancient Greek historian, Thucydides (c. 460-c.400 BC) made similar remarks in his work THE PELOPONESIAN WAR. If readers can revover from the depression of Brecht's drama, the play is not long, they should stop and engage in serious reflection.
Cured: The Tale of Two Imaginary Boys, by Lol Tolhurst
“On our first day of school, Robert and I stood at the designated stop at Hevers Avenue with our mothers, and that's when we met for the very first time. We were five years old.”
So began a lifelong friendship that fourteen years later would result in the formation of The Cure, a quintessential post-punk band whose albums—such as Three Imaginary Boys, Pornography, and Kiss Me, Kiss Me, Kiss Me—remain among the best-loved and most influential of all time.
As two of the first punks in the provincial English town of Crawley, Lol Tolhurst and Robert Smith didn't have it easy. Outsiders from the start, theirs was a friendship based initially on proximity and a shared love of music, from the punk that was raging in nearby London to the groundbreaking experimentation of David Bowie's “Berlin Trilogy.” First known as The Easy Cure, they began playing in pubs and soon developed their own unique style and approach to songwriting, resulting in timeless songs that sparked a deep sense of identification and empathy in listeners, songs like “Boys Don't Cry,” “Just Like Heaven,” and “Why Can't I Be You?,” spearheading a new subculture dubbed “Goth” by the press. The music of The Cure was not only accessible but also deeply subversive, challenging conventional notions of pop music and gender roles while inspiring a generation of devoted fans and a revolution in style.
Cured is not only the first insider account of the early days of the band, it is a revealing look at the artistic evolution of the enigmatic Robert Smith, the iconic lead singer, songwriter, and innovative guitarist at the heart of The Cure. A deeply rebellious, sensitive, tough, and often surprisingly “normal” young man, Smith was from the start destined for stardom, a fearless non-conformist and provocateur who soon found his own musical language through which to express his considerable and unique talent.
But there was also a dark side to The Cure's intense and bewildering success. Tolhurst, on drums and keyboards, was nursing a growing alcoholism that would destroy his place in The Cure and nearly end his life. Cured tells the harrowing and unforgettable story of his crash-and-burn, recovery, and rebirth.
Intensely lyrical and evocative, gripping and unforgettable, Cured is the definitive story of a singular band whose legacy endures many decades hence, told from the point of view of a participant and eyewitness who was there when it happened—and even before it all began.
Review
Pitchfork, 9/27/16
What begins as a coming-of-age storyand a fascinating snapshot of late 70s small-town Britain, a world rapidly fading from viewends up as a remarkably moving redemption narrative, one fueled by Tolhurst s considerable wit and welcome candor.
Yahoo Music, 9/28/16
Compulsively readablea fascinating chronicle not only of one man s disintegration and renewal, not only of two boys unique friendship, but also of an incredibly important era in music.
Salon, 10/5/16
Tolhurst s truths are wildly entertaining, to be sure, especially where music is concernedthe musician is also, however, an unsparing narrator who has been honest about his sometimes-difficult upbringing and his own flaws.
Washington Times, 10/5/16
Part rock bio and part cautionary tale, [Cured] is easily the best rock book in some time.
Fascinating.
“I didn’t need him to tell me that; I already knew what hell was like.”
By AcousticWarrior
I enjoyed Lol’s memoir for the most part. His writing style is good, and I managed to finish the book in just two days. In it, you’ll find lots of interesting, occasionally funny, tidbits about The Cure’s history, like the Billy Idol toilet incident, or he and Robert’s constant altercations with skinheads. Lol does a good job setting up a dynamic between him and Robert- one of best friendship, followed by a bitter sacking and lawsuit, and ultimately reconciliation after Lol recovered from his crippling alcoholism.
The reason I have to deduct a star is that Lol's recounting of 1985-1989 seems insufficiently thorough. This can be blamed in part on Lol’s out-of-control alcoholism and diminishing role in the band, but there are three omissions I find particularly odd. First, while Lol discusses songs like Killing An Arab, Let's Go To Bed, The Walk, and Love Cats at length, he has nothing to say about any of the prolific songs which emerged during the 1985-1989 period like Inbetween Days, Close To Me, Just Like Heaven, or Lovesong, let alone the colorful videos Tim Pope made for Close To Me and Why Can’t I Be You? He mentions Robert's room catching fire during the Disintegration sessions, but stops just short of saying this was the inspiration for Pictures Of You. Nor does Lol state which of his, albeit few, ideas made it to the Disintegration album (Homesick is rumored to stem from one of his demos). Second, Lol doesn’t even mention Roger O’Donnell (“a midterm addition to the band”) until the book’s last chapter on the 2011 Reflections shows. In reality, Roger joined in 1987 because of Lol’s incompetence, and even filled in for Lol at shows where he was too drunk to perform. Third, I’ve read many articles describing Lol as the butt of vicious abuse by other band members in the late 80s- Robert even penned Shiver and Shake and Babble about him. Lol has nothing to say about this either.
That being said, do get this book if you’re a Cure fan, because you’ll probably learn something. I emerged with a newfound respect for both Robert and Lol. Robert, the enigmatic figure who’s “part of this world and also not part of it,” and someone who fought hard for his success, as well as Lol’s protection. Lol, someone who while not very technically proficient, served as the band’s “X Factor,” and likely kept Robert from disbanding The Cure altogether circa 1983/84.
A Must Read for any Cure Fan
By Samantha Wilton
Cured is a unique and eye-opening account of the band's earliest years, life on tour, and Lol's own disintegration into alcoholism. Surprisingly well written and captivating, and with beautiful cover art designed by former band member Pearl Thompson, the book reads as a conversation with an old friend. I found myself laughing, smiling, and even crying as I read Lol's version of events. My heart breaks for little Lol growing up with a distant father. I feel his teenage angst as he describes the desire to escape his dismal surroundings and carve out a space for himself in the fascinating world of rock and roll. And I ache when I read how it felt for him to have been pushed out of the band when alcoholism got the best of him. The real triumph of this story comes in the form of his inspirational journey back from destruction. For years we fans have heard the rumors, seen the mockery that has been made of Lol, and wondered how it all truly went down. Tolhurst proves, much to our delight, that things are never so one-sided. A must read for any die-hard fan, this remarkably personal look into his life will turn you into a Lol Tolhurst fan if you're not already.
Funnily enough, I had been thinking about the lack of any really good recent books about the Cure, or by a member of the Cure--and not a day later, I read that this book was about to be released. I ordered it and waited eagerly for its release.
I didn't know what to expect; I haven't read or heard all that many interviews with Lol, and I wasn't sure what his style, voice, or tone would be like. Music autobios/memoirs are a crap shoot. Some are well done and leave you with a good sense of the individual and the evolution of his or her music and career; some are informative, but all too obviously written by ghost writers or edited with a heavy hand; and some are just plain disappointing across the board due to bad writing and/or the lack of honest self reflection and introspection on the part of the musician.
So I was very pleased to find out how much I truly enjoyed the book (I read it in a couple days). Lol is honest and authentic, which makes this book a satisfying read. He does an excellent job of recounting stories from the Cure's early days from his own perspective, providing insight into the personalities and relationships that make The Cure The Cure. He's respectful of his former bandmates, while primarily turning the critical eye towards himself. And unlike some musicians, he doesn't start telling a story only to end it abruptly with "well, I won't get into what happened next, it's too personal." Any story he tells, he tells from beginning to end, getting the point across without being unnecessarily salacious or shocking. This indicates a respect for the reader as well.
I'm really glad I read this book (and happened to hear about it at just the right time). I applaud Lol Tolhurst for the work he did in providing us with a genuinely insightful and satisfying read.
Just when 17-year-old Matt thinks he can't handle one more piece of terrible news, he meets a girl who's dealt with a lot more - and who just might be able to clue him in on how to rise up when life keeps knocking him down - in this wry, gritty novel from the author of When I Was the Greatest. Matt wears a black suit every day. No, not because his mom died - although she did, and it sucks. But he wears the suit for his gig at the local funeral home, which pays way better than the Cluck Bucket, and he needs the income since his dad can't handle the bills (or anything, really) on his own. So while Dad's snagging bottles of whiskey, Matt's snagging fifteen bucks an hour. Not bad. But everything else? Not good. Then Matt meets Lovey. She's got a crazy name, and she's been through more crazy than he can imagine. Yet Lovey never cries. She's tough. Really tough. Tough in the way Matt wishes he could be. Which is maybe why he's drawn to her, and definitely why he can't seem to shake her. Because there's nothing more hopeful than finding a person who understands your loneliness - and who can maybe even help take it away.
The Boy in the Black Suit
Despite being about death, grieving, and loneliness, The Boy in the Black Suit is a very uplifting read. Matthew's mother died a month ago and he's just trying to get through the rest of high school. He winds up taking an after school job at the funeral home after some hesitation. But Matthew finds that he really likes it. It might be morbid, but he enjoys sitting in on the funerals that he helped set up. He looks for the person who is closest to the deceased and feels less alone. Then one day, that person happens to be the girl he had his eye on.
The Boy in the Black Suit was a super quick read! I finished it in one sitting. I was immediately drawn in by Matthew's voice. He felt very real to me, and I couldn't help but be interested in what he had to say. I couldn't relate to him on the level of having someone close to me die, but I could totally relate to him trying to figure out what to do next. How does he move on from this? I also just really liked how he really liked funerals. That's probably strange, but it's something that worked for him and that's cool.
There's a lot of talk of death, and then Matthew's father also goes through some hardships, but The Boy in the Black Suit never felt heavy to me. Yes, Matthew is sad and I felt bad for his father, but I never felt sad. Matthew is doing the best he can and then he finds a job and a girl that he likes. He also has the funeral home owner watching out for him, and I liked seeing that relationship develop as well. The story is all about making connections. No matter what you're going through, you never have to do it alone.
