A useful book to have on hand

While enrolled in a college course in "nuclear chemistry" I used the 1982 hardcover edition of this book that was published by Halsted Press, a division of John Wiley & Sons of New York. While an unexpected but positive financial opportunity caused me to cancel my semester of study midway through, I read and worked with Dr. Arnikar's book long enough to appreciate it.

Dr. Hari Jeevan Arnikar is Professor Emeritus in Chemistry at the University of Poona and has had wide research experience. After receiving his Ph.D. from the Banaras Hindu University, he worked in the laboratories of the College de France, in Paris and obtained his Dr.es-Sc. Later, he worked as a Fulbright Visiting Scholar at the University of Wisconsin, Madison. Dr. Arnikar has also been a consultant to UNESCO in the Pilot Project for the Teaching of Chemistry in S.E. Asia, Bangkok.

As the Amazon.com description above mentions, this book presents theories of nuclear structure and stability, types of radioactivity and nuclear reactions, including fission and fusion, principles of nuclear reactor and elements of radiation chemistry. Also, typical applications of isotopes and nuclear radiation in research, medicine, and industry are described often with examples drawn from the author's work.

One of the things I liked about this book was that physical concepts, often left out in books for chemists (and students), are presented here clearly in small steps to help in the understanding of the material in question. I found this to be a very positive element in favor of the book and the author's approach. In addition, I found that numerous examples were worked out with the same objective. This makes for a book that one may go to easily at some future point for review and, therefore, belongs on the shelf of concerned students and professionals alike.

It is worth noting too, that SI units are used in general in this book along with some notes explaining these units (and their cgs equivalents). Selected problems with answers are found at the end of each chapter.

I believe this book was originally intended to meet the needs of advanced undergraduates and beginning Graduate students of both Indian and American universities offering nuclear and radiation chemistry. It also, in my view, serves as an introduction to more advanced books on the subject of nuclear chemistry. (Chapterwise references and a fairly comprehensive bibliography are provided as a guide for further study too.)

Having said all this, the book is not without its present day shortcomings. First, it was written and published almost thirty years ago so it cannot speak to recent developments and advances in the field of nuclear chemistry. (Still, chapter 6 on nuclear fission and chapter 7 on nuclear reactors hold up well in my view and are nicely presented.) Another slight problem some may have with this book is that while it is written clearly, it is written for an academic audience. Mature thinking students and other similiar individuals should not have a problem with this but it is not a book for the general reader.

I recommend this book be in the library of students, teachers, and those whose occupation involves the physical sciences and engineering -- especially with nuclear overtones. I found it to be a very useful book to turn to when one desires a straightforward explanation on some question or topic involving nuclear chemistry. I cannot say if Dr. Arnikar is still with us, but he deserves credit for writing a useful text on the subject that is accessible to many readers.

About the Author

Big Disappointment

This book is very short and the writing is very big. It contains nothing that you can't find on the Internet in a couple of minutes with google. In fact google is much more valuable. I often will buy a forex book to see if I can get something small out of it. There is nothing in this book of value unless you are an absolute novice and then I would still be scared as I feel you would blow your bankroll on the strategies presented. Trading is not that easy. This book was put out in such a hurry you can't even see the diagrams clearly. Stick with authors like Ponsi.What I find interesting is how many 5 star reviews this book has got, but none of these people have ever reviewed another book !

Took a chance!

While the writing style of this book makes it very straight-forward and easy to understand, it's way too short! The author only presents two strategies with 2-3 trading examples for each.

The first trade setup uses Moving Averages (Simple, Weighted, Exponential) while the second gives some insight on using Bollinger Bands.

Honestly, you can probably find the same amount of information in some of the Forex books going for $0.99 or even free online!!!

If you want more information on trade strategies and setups...look elsewhere!

Excellent book with practical advice

Forex Trading: Uncut is a slim book but packed with excellent advice from getting started to thinking long term. The key contributions in this book are contained in Chapter 3, The Game Plan which contains three specific strategies for trading Forex. Using the first strategy, I was able to achieve several winning trades in my initial attempts with this strategy. Perhaps most importantly following this strategy, I was able to stay out of a trade that I might have otherwise attempted. I was all set to go long on GBP/USD but held off because one of the signals described by the author of this book was not active. GBP/USD went down and I didn't suffer an unnecessary loss. Staying out of a losing trade more than paid for this great little book.

I am fortunate enough to be able to send my children (so far) to a private school where they are taught the truth about creation. About the Author
Brad Harrub holds an earned B.S. degree in biology from Kentucky Wesleyan College, and an earned doctorate degree in anatomy and neurobiology from the College of Medicine at the University of Tennessee in Memphis. He is listed in Who s Who Among Scientists and Researchers. He authored the books Convicted: A Scientist Examines the Evidence for Christianity, Dissecting the Truth, and coauthored of the books, The Truth About Human Origins, Investigating Christian Evidences, Matters of Life and Death, and Diamonds in the Rough: Nuggets of Truth from God s Word. He is a popular speaker on Christian evidences at lectureships, youth rallies, etc in over 46 states and five different continents. He conducts 40 Truth About Origins weekend seminars each year. In addition, he was an invited speaker to the International conference on Creationism, and he has appeared on the television show Origins. Dr. Harrub currently serves as director for Focus Press and as an editor for Think magazine. Dr. Harrub has authored or co-authored numerous scientific publications in science journals and has done mission work in Russia, Ukraine, New Zealand, and Nicaragua. Currently, Dr. Harrub serves as the Director and cofounder of Focus Press and as co-editor of Think magazine, a monthly magazine on Christian evidences. He is a faculty member of the Bear Valley Bible Institute in Denver.

Wonderful book and explains the Bible in physical and spiritual terms. One would be even more convinced that God is real and is the Creator of our world after reading this. No intelligent person who looks at both physical evidence and the Bible will not believe!

Light reading on Christian Evidences

I expected this book to be fact heavy and it does have lots of good facts. But in the first half of the book he uses way too many scriptures to enhance his arguments. I thought the point of the book was to prove Christianity from science, not scripture. Anyway, about midway through the book he actually gets down to heavier science. I did like the book. I recommend it for someone that is not ready for heavy, technical science but wants a general understanding of the flaws in the evolutionary theory of creation.
