A beautiful collection of fairy tales

Rod Starke's fairy tales are fascinating and often dark stories. This collection contains some really beautiful works, but my favorite is probably the girl who doesn't stop dancing. Like all good fairy tales, these stories can be read and reread many times, and somehow they continue to fascinate each time.

Full of fairy tale wonder, this book offers 7 well-crafted stories which can be read over and over. FYI - For older kids.

An enchanting collection of stories that just keeps getting better and better the more you read. Each story is full of fairy tale wonder with a flash of darkness running throughout. While the darkness brings out rich beauty, it should be noted that the book is for older kids. And while not every story ends happily, Starcke does end them satisfactorily.

Starcke tackles questions we all struggle with such as the importance of beauty, wanting to be accepted, searching for love, understanding spirituality, the ties of friendship, and loyalty. Each story keeps you thinking long after you've finished.

Full of meaning and enchantment, these stories are well crafted in the style of the Brothers Grimm and Hans Christian Andersen. They can be read over and over. Its hard to choose a favorite, but I believe the last three spoke to me the most. When I started reading the book, I could not put it down. I look forward to experiencing the magic contained in these pages again.

The Real Thing

Once upon a time, fairy tales were the magical stories the old folks told beside the fire to pass the long winter nights. They were spooky and dark, filled with images that pulled the listeners into the tale and ran chills up and down their spines. Although Hans Christian Andersen's stories often included a Christian element, they were cast in the same mold: eerie, magical, and vivid.

In these days of antiseptic, Disney-ized fairy tales, we've almost forgotten the original ones. Almost. But as long as kids tell each other ghost stories around the campfire, there will be a place in our hearts for the spooky and mysterious to haunt.

Here, Rod Starke has created a set of fairy tales cast very much in Andersen's mold. So sit down beside your fireplace and draw up a copy of these stories. They're sure to capture your imagination.

Eye-opener.

This should be mandatory for anyone born in the Americas especially United States. As a black man, I found it extremely fascinating to see the incredibly beautiful and tragic side of the history of Latin America and how the country I live in has rarely helped its neighbors to thrive. I can't help but think to myself, how can you even have any opinion on US-Latin American relations if you have not read this book?? It's absolutely essential. Everything else is just what the US government propaganda machine wants you to believe about our Latin American neighbors. At least we finally reopened our embassy in Cuba. That's the least we can do and my prayer is that Mercosur will be as strong as the EU to really provide a counterbalance to the overpowered United States.

My only request to the author is this: Can you please make a book like this for Africa, too? Its modern history has not been summarized like this yet.

Thom Kennedy Leyton returns to San Francisco to take up the reins of Graze, one of the city’s best restaurants, years after he lost his job when his innovative new set of recipes was stolen. Thom’s loss of self-esteem eventually caused his boyfriend, Blake Warner, to end their relationship, sending Thom into a deep depression.

Now, cured of fifty excess pounds and any attraction to Blake, Thom’s back in town. Blake catches him off guard when he visits Graze several days in a row, and Thom lets himself get caught up in Blake’s allure, despite knowing better.

Thom juggles a renewed relationship with Blake, a Christmas visit from his parents, and an important holiday menu based on a Twelve Days of Christmas theme. When an old acquaintance reveals that Blake knows more about the theft of the recipes than he lets on, Thom doesn’t know whom to trust. But the truth isn’t quite that simple, and Thom won’t be able to decide if Blake deserves a place in his life until he learns exactly what happened years ago.

Great story!!

EM Lynley has done it again. I love her Delectable series and this story story novella was stellar. I did take � star away because I didn't like the ending. In this story we had Thom who lost his first chef position when accused of stealing recipes when it was opposite. Blake was his boyfriend and was involved in the theft (in a way) you'll have to read the book to see what happens. For someone who's not a chef Ms. Lynley really comes up with some great recipes. I loved hearing about all the great recipes and how Thom was able to salvage his reputation. This was an excellent story centered around Christmas.

Yummy!

If anything, I admire the writer's imagination when it comes to food and the cooking of it. I felt I was eating along!! The plot got a little "strange" towards the end at the revelation of the betrayal, but all in all, it was fine. I really would like to know what happened to the other chef (the boyfriend) who was fired. Did he get a job elsewhere? Good story!

Hungry for love

I’ve been following the Delectable series, and was quite pleased with the Christmas-y edition of this food centered series. Not only has the author cooked up a second chances story to break and remake hearts, but the food writing is well, delectable.

Poor Thom, never sure of himself, even during his culinary school days. He was a star of the school, but even then he wasn’t quite sure why the hottest guy with the amazing credentials and skills wanted him. And then when it ended badly, following a professional crash and burn of epic proportions, his confidence was rocked even further. At last taking the helm of a noted restaurant in one of the foodie capitals of America, he worries about a repeat of his disgrace. Having Blake walk back into his life is both thrilling and terrifying, and completely entwined with the food.

Thom was the more fully realized character for me, with one thing after another piled on him, from an insubordinate chef who needs a swift kick to parents who mean well but are just Too Much, plus enough in his past to make any man look over his shoulder twice. I wanted to cook him mac and cheese and tell him everything would be okay, right after I kicked his mother in the shins. Sweet guy that he is, he finds his balance and his balls, and let him take necessary risks in both his restaurant and his love life.

Blake would have been just as interesting without the overkill background (Harvard Law? Really?). Handsome and gifted in all areas except perhaps courage, we get to watch his guilty conscience torment him into doing the right thing, and then going overboard.

I’m not sure if it was the blurb or something early in the text (can’t find it now, but terrible blurb, don't read it, read the story) that took the impact out of a big revelation, but if it didn’t surprise me, it certainly surprised Thom, who was rattled right down to his bones. The author jerks him around so hard on the way to letting him find forgiveness in his heart, and Blake too, for needing it and earning it.

The romance progresses with food, both in the restaurants and what they feed each other. Thom’s concoctions for his tasting menu sound divine, and Blake’s lobster grilled cheese sandwiches are the new food of love. The sensuality of the food carries over into the bedroom. The sex was wrapped with body image. I could see what it was supposed to for the story, it just seemed tacked on and took away from the joy in the delicious things they were putting in each other’s mouths.

I was flicking pages eagerly, wanting to see how exactly they were going to launch this new chapter in their relationship, and then… Well, I have high hopes for them.

This was definitely a delectable romance, and I wish I could eat dinner (and peek at the chefs) at Graze.

It’s only very recently that issues concerning mental health have achieved greater prominence in society and we talk about such matters more today than we did.

In part this is due to the continued confusing legislation of the past and the lack of expertise by lawyers and medical advisers in print until now. Yes, we have the experts, and we do rely on expert evidence in some cases, but matters such as increases in dementia and the array of mental issues now emerging which confront society have always tended to be put away in a drawer in the hope that they will be forgotten.

Not anymore! As practitioners, we are asked to advise much more frequently on mental health issues from both sides of the table and in the different settings. It is clear that the trend will continue and so LAG’s “Mental Health Tribunal Handbook” is a most welcome new title, written by experts for the legal practitioner and with excellent background for the expert witness.

This Study Bible Contains a Small Reference Library!

I was looking for a New American Standard Bible translation to use for my writing which would complement my other translations at home. This hardcover edition of The MacArthur Study Bible (Updated Edition) definitely provided me so much more than just the basic, inexpensive, hardbound NASB translation that I was looking for.

The text is easy to read, printed on (thin) quality paper and is loaded with study features. Each page of my Large Print Edition is nicely arranged for study with a double-column format and relevant study notes at the bottom of each page. The notes are in a different font style so they are distinct from the biblical text. A center column on each page contains additional verse references and literal word renderings.

Some of the features include a pretty traditional set of maps, an excellent concordance and an exceptional series of charts spread throughout the Old and New Testaments, providing a tremendous amount of relevant study information. The placement of the charts and study notes on the applicable page make referencing the material much simpler than other Study Bibles, like the Thompson Chain Reference Bible and the Scofield Study Bible. A general Introduction to the Bible is also included, along with information on How We Got The Bible, How To Study The Bible and a nice explanation on how to best use the general format of this Bible. The OT and NT have an additional introduction, as well as information on the Pentateuch (First five books of the OT) and an introduction to the OT Prophets. Each book of the OT and NT also have its own individual introduction.

As you can see, this isn't your grandfather's Bible. It's a fully-equipped Study Bible with enough helpful reference material to keep you busy for quite some time! The notes and other material are written with the general reader in mind; that is, they are very helpful and you don't have to be a Bible scholar to understand them. That in itself is a big plus.

The hardcover I purchased comes with a dust jacket and because I chose the Large Print Edition, it is a rather thick, heavy book (2 1/2 inches thick & over 4 and a half pounds). Thankfully, I don't plan on carrying it around with me, and it will stay on my computer desk at home. With such a large volume, I am concerned how well the binding will hold up over time, since it is not a stitched binding? Whether it does or not, I will add an addendum to this review later on and let you know.

I got a deal on my copy from a seller on Amazon.com (60% off -- Like New), so with the NASB translation I was looking for, all of the study notes and a bushel of reference material I would want in a study Bible, it will probably come as no surprise to hear I am very pleased with The MacArthur Study Bible.

Excellent Study Bible and the large print will keep me reading.

I have owned several MacArthur Bibles. This is my first NASV of the MacArthur lineup. I have given several as gifts but I lost a couple of them while my life was going through some changes. John MacArthur's study notes have helped me understand "what the bible means by what it says." (MacArthur quote)Without the inspiration I receive from reading, studying and searching the scriptures for answers to my life's problems, and without John MacArthur to help me know what I am reading is God's Truth, I would not have made it through the many years of homelessness I went through.

I heard about John in about 1984 from someone who thought I needed some guidance. I thank that person greatly and now I am passing this information on to anyone who may need some spiritual help. If you want to grow in your Faith, you need a good teacher. This Bible IS a clear translation and explanation of the Word of God and what His Word means to all of us.

It is a life changing read, for "Faith comes from hearing, and hearing from the Word of God."

NASB MacArthur Study Bible Large Print Indexed

Happy with the cover, Very Happy with the content.

I've had this for a couple of months, now. The cover was not what I expected -- somewhere between soft leather and a rubbery something. Feels good, though. The inside, of course is what counts. The paper is good quality and very, very white. My dry yellow highlighter marks are quite visible, but not on the other side of the page. Same is true for my fine (.005) marker pens. My notes are clear, but don't bleed through to the other side. I like MacArthur's commentary quite a lot. The internal cross references (within the Bible text, and also within the study notes) are excellent. The NASB has become one of my favorite translations. I like the ESV and the NIV, too. When I consult a reverse-interlinear Bible (think "Berean"), I find that the NASB usually gets closer to a literal translation, though any translation will have to deal with differences in language usage and cultural customs. On the whole, I would recommend this Study Bible without hesitation.

This is a must have.

The scholarly journal work that is available at this time is very limited. What can be found is dated and of limited use. This is a text book, and so is fundamentally useful for courses where it is required but since crisis intervention is an aspect of every class I am taking and each paper I have to write, I find myself going back to this source constantly. Outside of the realm of paper writing, where sourcing isn't an issue, this is a practical guide for crisis intervention for anyone who might need such information.

The inclusion of vicarious trauma, the actual definition of what crisis is (the reaction to an activating event and not the event itself) and warnings about interfering with the natural coping mechanisms by acting too fast make this invaluable. There is information in this text which ought to be intuitive but is not and is well worth knowing. This will remain on my "go to" shelf for a long time to come.
