Excellent book

I rate Compiler Construction: Principles and Practice to the same category as legendary Kernighan/Ritchie C Programming Language, Petzold's Programming Windows or Richter's Programming Server Side Applications for MS Windows 2000. This is one of the best books I have ever read.

Compiler construction is relatively hard topic with lot of theory needed to be understood before you can write even the most trivial compiler. Regular expressions, finite automata, BNF or attribute grammars are just few things you need to know and known them very well before you can write you own compiler.

Many books paying too much attention to theory, but theory itself without many practical examples is nearly useless - especially if you are new in this field. You need examples, very good, thoroughly explained examples and even better source code where theory is transformed into practice. This is something that the book does and does it very well.
Every topic is covered by such examples and at the end of every chapter there is practical implementation of scanner, parser (recursive descent), semantic analyzer and code generator in 'raw' C, using very simple (but useful) language called TINY.

Another great thing is how the book is organized. First chapter introduces major steps in compiler design like scanning, parsing, semantic, runtime environment, code generation and subsequent chapters dealing with these topics. That's great, because after finishing each chapter you can write your own scanner (chapter 2), top down parser (chapter 4), bottom up parser (chapter 5), semantic analyzer (chapter 6) and runtime environment and code generation (last 2 chapters).

Probably the best 'proof' how great this book is, is the fact that I as an absolute beginner in compiler construction (I have been working professionally as developer for 10 years), was able to write down my own scanner, parser (LL(1), LR(1), and also LALR(1)), semantic analyzer and code generator to 0x86 MASM ASSEMBLER in 'raw' C#, without using of any automatic generators like Lex or Yacc for simple C- language presented in the book (language has global and local variables, procedures, simple arrays and strings).

Compiler Construction: Principles and Practice is the best book for everyone who has no previous experience with compiler construction. Book doesn't cover all advanced topics but it's the best material for those ones who are new in this field. After finishing book you will have enough theoretical and practical experiences to move to more advanced books (but also much more difficult to grasp) like famous Dragon book.

This is a fantastic book because Louden gives the theory behind how compilers and programming languages work, and then implements the theory with a simple programming language written for this book. This book, however, will take you some time and much study to complete.

Colin Renfrew is Disney Professor Emeritus of Archaeology and former Director of the McDonald Institute for Archaeological Research at the University of Cambridge. He is the author and editor of many books, including Before Civilization, Archaeology and Language, and Prehistory and coeditor (with Paul Bahn) of The Cambridge World Prehistory. He is a fellow of the British Academy and a life peer in the House of Lords.

Pretty good for an intro course, not much else

Used this for an intermediate archaeology course, but am reviewing this a few semesters later as my study in the field has deepened. This is a great intro book, and covers a lot of content, but on a fairly superficial level. This would be great for an enthusiast, or non-anthro major, but would prove to be fairly redundant for anyone past the intermediate stage. We as a class ended up ditching the book half way through the semester.

Of course, your courses might be different, but all of the information that could possibly covered in your course can be found online with more detail.

I rented this textbook as a optional resource for a Coursera class on Archeology and it was a great investment for a novice, such as myself. I'll definitely be exercising the option to purchase the book at the end of my rental. It's easy to understand, while not being condescending. Great starter reference!

Brilliant.

This text is a brilliant overview of archaeology, including excavation methods, dating techniques, the development of archaeology and much much more. A must for those interested in archaeology, those beginning their study in archaeology, and even for amateur archaeologists. Well written and thought provoking, this is so much better than those dry dusty old text books. I read the whole thing right through, and enjoyed it thoroughly.

Just an awful book. It does not cover anything that is in my Linear Algebra text book. It is hard to navigate and some examples refer to diagrams that are apparently in some other book. Stick to something else rather than waste your money on this.

Very good book, worth the price

I got an A in my Linear Algebra class. Part of it may be due to the countless hours upon hours that I studied every week. However, the tools at my disposal helped make the quality of the time worthy. This book is another valueable tool to keep in your toolchest and I'd recommend this as an accompanyment to your class. They do a great job with Vector spaces and Determinants as well as Gaussian elimination. I particularly liked some of the "trick" questions that they stuck in from chapter to chapter (great study aid as many teachers like to stick these types of trick questions). My only complaint is that they prefer to calculate the basis of a row space by non-transposition (whereas our teacher (in our course) used the transposition technique) so I could not really go by that section (thus the **** rather than ***** review) but I can't really fault the author as teachers have their preferences as to how they want their students to calculate certain answers.
I recommend this book. Heck, it's only $24 (you can get a used copy for half the price) and I suspect you'll spend "more" time with this book than you will your actual $100+ textbook (I know that I did).
I'd also like to recommend that you hunt down a used copy (or go to your library and see if they have it) of "Elementary Linear Algebra" by Howard Anton. We had to use the Grossman book (along with its confusing examples and below-average way of showing proofs). After getting frustrated with the Grossman book (and only using it to do the homework problems (but not using the book to actually understand the concepts as the book was way-below-par in doing so) as our teacher assigned us numerous problems), I stuck mainly with the Anton book (any edition after (or including) the 4th edition will do) and this book to get me thru the course with an A.
Get this book though. Even if it helps you understand just one topic more clearly then your textbook (and I'm sure it will help you with dozens), it will have paid for itself. You can never practice enough (as Linear algebra will take alot of your time) and this book will come in handy with their explanation and sample problems (that so many textbooks neglect to show). One word of caution though is that the author prefers to solve some of the problems in ways that your teacher may not. Never-the-less, a good book.

Published by Brown, Son & Ferguson and written by Master Mariner Daire Brunicardi, this 440-page illustrated book has been produced for the officer on a bridge of a modern vessel fitted with modern equipment. Its emphasis is also on modern practices. Some mention is made of impending developments enabling the reader to prepare for new practices, or equipment. The author has written the book with the students at nautical schools and colleges in mind. These include all levels, from the cadet, or trainee, to those studying for a Master's certificate, or various nautical degrees, or other qualifications. It is also meant to be a reference work, which can be carried at sea, as for example, the requirements of STCW and of the relevant IMO model courses are given prominence. The author recognises the contribution of William Burger in the early days of radar training for commercial vessels, whose influence can still be seen and heard in lecturers' notes in nautical colleges today. This book looks at the fundamental technology behind the bridge display, but does not take radar in isolation as today it is integrated with other navaids to a greater, or lesser extent. Several pages are devoted to radar plotting, as a ship's officer should be able to plot and determine the risk of collision when automation is not available. It also helps to build up an appreciation of relative motion, so when viewing an ARPA, the data looks to be correct. Due to the many types of navaids on the market, a navigating officer must familiarise his or herself of the equipment on the bridge. This can take time and should not be undertaken while on watch, the author stressed. This book is claimed by the publishers to be written in a simple format, bearing in mind that for many officers, English is not their first language. It is also aimed at a new entrant into the nautical profession and thus jargon and obscure acronyms have not been used, except for the traditional nautical terms.

An easily understood book with illustrations that show you what to expect when operating at sea

Few developments in the maritime sphere have been as ground-breaking as the development of radar and AIS (automatic identification system) since WWII. Their introduction has fundamentally altered how navigation is conducted, and it would be unthinkable nowadays to go to sea without either. Drawing on his wealth of experience, firstly in the Naval Service and later at Cork Institute of Technology (CIT) and the National Maritime College of Ireland (NMCI), Daire Brunicardi has produced a book that should be considered essential reading for anyone considering, or in the early stages of a career at sea as a ship's watchkeeping officer.

The information is presented in an easily understood manner, and illustrations allow an appreciation of what to expect when operating at sea. It covers basic radar principles at length, which gives a very firm grounding in radar operations. It expands on the various sections that comprise a modern radar system at sea, from the transmitter and scanner to the receiver and display.

The author discusses the various techniques that are applied when navigating a vessel using radar, with reference to collision avoidance and target tracking. Though visual pilotage remains the primary means of navigation in coastal waters, especially with the Naval Service, in cases where this is not possible, in restricted visibility at night, etc., radar comes into its own. The use of parallel indexing and concentric indexing techniques are covered in depth, with almost 50 radar plotting exercises that allow the mariner to hone his, or her, skills.

Modern developments that are having far-reaching effects on radar navigation are not ignored either. The integration of radar with electronic chart display and information systems (ECDIS) and AIS has had a dramatic effect on the amount of information that is presented to the modern deck officer. The author remains positive with regard to these developments though cautions against over-reliance on these new systems to the detriment of the more traditional radar navigational skills.

This is an informative read that should be carried by all watchkeepers, regardless of rank, such is its comprehensiveness and attention to detail on a subject that is instrumental to the trade that we ply.
