Changed my Whole Paradigm

I admit that I am not well-traveled and more than a little naive about other cultures outside the United States, so perhaps some things in this book that were relevations to me may not be to others. But I give this book five stars alone for the lengthy chapter toward the end on accumulating merit via meditation and good deeds as a way to change your fate and fortune. You may be highly skeptical of these things, I can't say where each reader stands on this, but it was exactly the right information for me at the right time. I'd studied yoga and meditation thru Sadhguru and even wrote my own primer on it, but this book contains a great deal more information from a person who's made this their life. I still faithfully do my Shambhavi Mahamudra that I learned from Sadhguru, but I've added several of the techniques that I've learned from Bodri's book.

In the second chapter there is some great information on Mantra meditations and I've developed the habit of silently chanting "Om Ah Hung," whenever I catch myself with free time. Such a simple anytime, anywhere meditation and it's hard for me to describe but I feel much happier and in control of my life since I've read this book and put various techniques into practice (which is important...don't just read it, actually do it...I shouldn't have to say that). I bought my copy when it first came out last month via Create Space which is an imprint of Amazon.

The White Skeleton meditation on about page 80 (from memory, sorry) is something that I do every night as I lay down to bed and I have these incredibly vivid dreams now, where as before, I'd often wake not remembering any dreams at all. As a writer in fiction, music, poetry and non-fiction, doing these practices seems to have cleared a lot of the rubbish out of my mind and now when I sit down to write, the thing I most love to do, I never seem to get stuck. This meditation is supposed to help unblock Chi (prana), and I can say after three weeks that I am already feeling these benefits with increased energy. I've worked an office job for twenty years and have three young children so I've noticed my energy levels lagging, especially after the kids were born. To gain back some of my old energy is nothing sort of remarkable and I couldn't be more pleased. Even with doing my Shambhavi Mahamudra everyday, I'd still struggle with energy levels and by the time I put the kids to bed it was about all I could do to peel myself off the couch.

I was turned on to Bodri last summer and while I struggled with the advanced material in Little Book of Hercules, I've enjoyed his eBook White Fat Cow, and his recent Nei-Gong book which is a nice short read with a lot of good information. Little Book of Meditation, though, was mesmerizing to me and I'd find myself putting the book down periodically and saying to myself, "Wow, this is a really great book."

Again, if you are an advanced meditation practioner, this may not be as relevatory but at 388 pages, I'd be very surprised if even the life-long practitioner didn't find something of value in the book.

A Great Distillation

Why five stars? Quite simply - this book has got it all! I am purchasing more of these books to give away as gifts, as I have many friends that have meditated for years and have made NO SIGNIFICANT PROGRESS at all. This book is a great distillation of everything that you will need to know in order to make real progress in meditation. There are interesting true life stories, very practical suggestions on how to advance in meditation practice, detailed step by step instructions for specific meditations, unique breath retention instructions, and in-depth philosophical explanations on the nature of consciousness and the mind. In my opinion, the section on the nature of consciousness and the mind could be used as a deep contemplation practice in itself and is definitely worth the price of the book. Bodri is a creative writer and reading this book is like spending an afternoon with an intensely fascinating person who obviously has made authentic progress on the meditation path.

This cuts through the unnecessary and will deliver you results

This book will give the beginner all the understanding I see over and over again that even longtime meditators lack, and when they after years get it, they finally start to make progress.

It is commendable that this book is so practical and geared toward the western minds. We have little time, and little patience with rituals, hand wavering and ornamental practices that don't deliver palpable results. We don't like to be held in the dark and we want to understand what we are doing, why. Fortunately, many of us dare to question and dare to switch systems if we find that they deliver.

I have picked up many of the practices in this book over the years, and my old practices have been more or less replaced. I remember when I finally started with the white skeleton meditation, then my qi at last got going. Why had I waited so long with this method? I practiced it whenever I had time, in single sessions, but also when watching a movie, listening to music and so on - and it has paid off very well.

The section about nine bottle pranayama also gives you some crucial notes that make all the difference. I had to discover myself that there is a threshold that comes when you retain the breath. If you make it there, you will start to work with your channels. Fortunately this is in the book, so read it carefully!

I'm now also returning to anapana with great motivation. The information in this book and the book about inner martial arts (also by William Bodri) contain important, very important sections on anapana. When I tried them out, I found out that I could cultivate my qi and my channels through this method also, something other varieties of anapana didn't do well. My meditation is advancing and I am seeing steady progress after years of detours!

I have seen people following systems such as Dzogchen and esoteric practices become discouraged after several years because of lack of progress. This simply because they didn't have a foundation of meditational ability, they couldn't sense their energy flows in their body, have bodily transformations, didn't have stable minds, didn't get rid of blockages in their bodymind that had been causing them trouble; and didn't have the necessary changes in their minds, subtle structures and bodies to be able to grasp high stage practices.

This book will give the tools to the beginner and even intermediate and advanced practitioners, that will allow them to build a solid foundation which will keep them on the spiritual path without regrets. It contains all the parts crucial for making progress (if one ingredient is missing, results will be meagre), and the warnings that will enable you to shed hours of inefficient practice.

I'll recommend this book to every acquaintance who wants to start meditating.
