About the Author
Robert Adams (1932-1990) was a career soldier whose Horseclans series drew on his military background to lend verisimilitude to the exploits of 26th century of immortal mutant warriors in a balkanized North America. The Coming of the Horseclans (originally published in 1975) was the first of 18 novels in the sequence, which ended, with The Clan of the Cats (1988), only on account of the author’s death. His non-Horseclans work included two other series. Castaways in Time (1980) and its five sequels were a mix of alternate history and time travel. The Stairway to Forever and Monsters and Magicians (both 1988) were the only volumes to appear of a projected fantasy series. He also co-edited several anthologies, among them Barbarians (1985, with Martin H. Greenberg and Charles H. Waugh), four Magic in Ithkar volumes (1985-87, with Andre Norton), Robert Adams’ Book of Alternate Worlds (1987, with Pamela Crippen Adams and Martin H. Greenberg) and Robert Adams’ Book of Soldiers (1988, same co-editors).

Another fast paced entry in the Horseclans series
By gloine36
This is the sixth entry in Robert Adams’ Horseclans series. With this volume, Adams departs from the Bili the Axe storyline and leaps forward in time about 35 to 40 years. Bili the Axe is now an arkeethoheeks of the Confederation, which is still going as strong as ever. Decades have passed since the Ehleen rebellion, but the threat is about to reemerge thanks to the continuing machinations of the Witch Kingdom and its agents. With this setting Adams prepares to introduce three more undying mutants. It also illustrates Adams’ continued rejection of organized religion.
This book also continues the overall pulp fiction aspects of sex, carnage, intrigue, and fairly simple plot devices. The result is still an entertaining read which satisfies its target audience, but is by no means on the scale of Tolkien. Then again, it was not meant to be that. Personally, I like the escapism of the books. I know Adams was tying in some of his personal opinions, but at the same time the series served as a what might happen if the world blew up type of literature. Considering that the Cold War was in full swing at the time of the books being written and one can easily see where an audience would be found. An entire genre of apocalyptic writing existed in that time as well.
As such, this series is much better than most of that genre’s entries. The series emerged in print at the same time as the first booklets of the Dungeons & Dragons game and would be read by many of the game’s players. That’s how I got into the series along with several others like Gor and Shannara. While Adams’ books are not widely read today, they still have good escapist qualities. This book is an illustration of how Adams was maturing as an author in my opinion. It is one of the few books in the series that had more complex plot developments. It also set the stage for additional books, but never followed up on them.

sigh, this is the last of the OK installments
By Ronda Swolley
This is the last of the fairly decent installments of this series, after this it drifts off topic. There is some of it already here, but mostly he stays in the one setting which helps a lot. The entire thing is fighting, gore, blood and guts, torture, and excitement - but he at least has a relevant focus for the plot and tries to maintain that focus. I am ok with the blood and fighting - it can be a nice change from other sorts of novels - but there is only so much I want without a decent plot to back it up and characters that are interesting. Still, even at this point it is obvious he is seriously homophobic, which in his time was not as much of an issue as it would be now.
Up until the novel following this one, Milo is a fabulously interesting character! Too bad this is the beginning of the end.
The author was so wrapped up in getting his political views presented to the reader that he forgot to focus on the writing. There were some sections in all of these books that were stellar segments of writing, but most of it was disjointed as he traveled through time from the future to his main characters past, and the transitions were not well done. He would have been better off writing two groups of novels - one a futuristic alternate earth story focused on his characters of the future, and the other a set of novels about living as a soldier during a war and surviving an apocalypse in that time frame. If he had written this as two separate books without the inserted political drivel, both would have been good - but with the confused disjointed jumping back and forth, it was a bitter disappointment. Especially as I had looked forward to reading novels that were about the characters from a short story about the Horseclans which I had previously read.
I am not sure if this one did it (I read the entire series since I had already bought them) but there was also a lot of repeating of earlier writing incorporated into later books that were something of the entirety of the Horseclans sections without any new material of substance about them. Some added new material to previously written sections or added the same story line from a different point of view, but it was interspersed between sections on his other topic.

Good,a weird typo though/
By Douglas J. Berry
Now,I really like this series but the estate needs to keep an eye on the quality. A lot of names that start with a capital G,such as God,Geros,Giliana and Gais, are being replaced with a capital O, like Ood,Oeros,Oiliana and Oas. doesn't happen all the time and not present in original book. If it weren't for the refences to a few other novels this could have been a stand alone novel. Hope they reprint all this authors works, "Stairway to Forever" is getting hard to find.
